Following the floods of November 2019, a small group of volunteers from the Djiboutian diaspora rushed to launch a solidarity movement to help those affected by the floods, under the committee created expressly for the occasion. and named DjibCan (Djibouti Canada).
It’s fantastic to see how DjibCan (Djibouti Canada) and now SODCAN (SOlidarité Djibouti CANada) originated and grew to initially provide valuable aid to flood victims in Djibouti:
o Initial goal: Raise $15,000 via GoFundMe.
o Solidarity concert: Carried out on January 4, 2020, generated $6,071.
o Total collected: 16,243 dollars, or approximately 2,170,000 FDd.
o Food distribution: On March 29, 2020, 100 families received food kits worth 25,130 FDd per family, distributed thanks to our local partner Société Civile Solidaire Djibouti (SCSD).
o Legal registration: July 3, 2020, as a non-profit organization.
o Implementation:
These actions show strong commitment and capacity to mobilize resources to meet the urgent needs of affected communities. SODCAN seems well positioned to continue to make a significant difference in Djibouti, but primarily in Canada given its new missions.
