A mission of sustainable development

A cultural mission
Unite the Djiboutian community of Canada around cultural events and common values.
Promote Djiboutian culture in Canada.
About
SODCAN, Solidarity Djibouti-Canada, was created in November 2019 following the initiative of certain members of the community in order to mobilize the Djiboutian diaspora of Canada to come to the aid of our compatriots who were facing torrential rains in Djibouti. It is from this surge of solidarity that SODCAN was born.
The Djiboutian diaspora in Canada being substantial, it was important for us to perpetuate this initiative and to create a structure to support our community presence in Canada and maintain links with our compatriots in Djibouti.
SODCAN is a non-profit organization.
Values
Dignity: We want to help our members by promoting their autonomy.
Solidarity: We want to strengthen ties within our diaspora and with our compatriots at home, while building bridges with the Canadian society as a whole.
Transparency: We are committed to ensuring rigorous and transparent management as well as to acting in a constant search for effectiveness and efficiency.
Respect: We want our organization to play a unifying role, welcoming difference and working for each member of the community with respect for all.

Given that one of SODCAN‘s main missions is the promotion of youth education, the organization created the “SODCAN Scholarships” program in 2020. This program aims to annually reward graduating students (Grade 12 in Ontario / 1st year CEGEP in Quebec) for their academic excellence and community involvement.
Since its inception, the SODCAN Scholarships program has been a resounding success. We have held three editions, with the latest in 2023 awarding scholarships to 13 deserving graduates (10 in 2022 and 2 in 2021). This program has not only recognized academic excellence and community involvement but has also inspired a significant increase in the number of young community members pursuing post-secondary education. Your support can help us continue this positive trend.
This year, the Board of Directors has expanded the SODCAN Scholarships program to include graduating university students.
We invite you to attend our annual fundraising Gala, which will take place on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 6:00 PM in Ottawa, at the Prime Venue Banquet & Reception Hall (1989 Prince of Wales Drive). This highly anticipated event is expected to host up to 200 guests from various backgrounds across the region to help us achieve our goal: awarding twenty scholarships. All proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships, and other donations will fund the SODCAN Scholarships program for 2024.
All funds raised on this occasion will be entirely dedicated to financing the SODCAN 2024 Scholarships program in order to reward the academic excellence and community involvement of secondary and post-secondary graduates & graduating university students in June 2024.
